Victorian House: Accommodation in The Lake District

Victorian House Hotel is located in Broadgate, Grasmere in the Lake District. The Hotel seeps traditional infrastructure and beauty. It was built in 1872 as a guest house, right at the beginning of the advent of tourism to the lakes and has continued to remain to be at the heart of Grasmere ever since. It is accessible from London as there are train links from Euston station to Grasmere, which takes approximately 5 hours, as well as car links but we do encourage guests to refer back to our plant a tree scheme, to ditch the car and go carbon-free but we do also provide a limited number of car parking spaces.

Popular Activities

One of the Lake District’s prettiest villages is Grasmere, nestled in a vale just north of Grasmere lake and crowned by magnificent fells and mountains on all sides. This is romantic England at its purest: immediately south of town is the rugged peak of Helm Crag (aka ‘the Lion and the Lamb’), while to the north is the ancient cairn known as Dunmail Raise. All around it are the scattered hamlets and farmsteads, while dense woodlands and lush meadows fringe the lakes of Grasmere and Rydal Water and Loughrigg Tarn.

One of the most beloved destinations in Grasmere is Dove Cottage, where you can immerse yourself in the world of the renowned poet William Wordsworth. This charming cottage is connected to the William Wordsworth Museum and welcomes visitors every day. Currently, Dove Cottage is open from March to October, from 9:30am to 5:30pm, and from November to February, from 10:00am to 4:30pm.

Experience a delightful hike to a breathtaking viewpoint that can be completed in just 2 hours round trip. The Helm Crag trail offers stunning views of Grasmere Lake and is a must-do activity during your Lake District weekend getaway. It’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and immerse yourself in the picturesque surroundings.

If you’re not particularly interested in churches, St Oswald’s Church is still a must-see when visiting Grasmere. Its impressive spire is hard to miss as you wander around the town. Dating back to the 14th century, the church is named after Oswald, who established the first church in Grasmere in 600 AD. The church’s roughcast stone and traditional Lake District grey slate make for a stunning sight.

Five Reasons to Visit Grasmere This Winter

Grasmere is known for its beautiful lake, rolling hills and quaint village charm. But it also boasts another claim to fame – it has links with poets William and Dorothy Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere. They felt it was “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” And while summer may draw the crowds, nothing is more beautiful than uncrowded streets, the chilly beauty of the colder months, and the pleasures of the local Grasmere area during winter.

Winter Wonderland Views

Summer sights in the Lake District are breathtakingly unique, but winter is something truly special, especially around smaller lakes like Grasmere, where the wild areas and lack of lake traffic are preserved. Nothing beats a wintery landscape dusted with snow in which the world seems to fall silent. It’s truly magical to experience and be a part of the stillness, soaking in the magnificence of nature. Even without the snow, ice-crackling grass with icicles clinging to tree leaves evokes the same wonder with frozen lake fringes, towering hills reflecting in the motionless water, and calm all around.

Grasmere Winter Walks

There’s nothing nicer than exploring that landscape with a winter walk, discovering new paths and maybe even spotting a sleepy animal or two. There are so many great circular walks around Grasmere – why not take a loop around the lake? Or, for a more adventurous trek, try the Grasmere and Helm Crag Circular or the direct Grasmere to Ambleside Coffin Route. No matter your route, visit the Lake District site for year-round safety tips.

Grasmere Gingerbread

Victorian cook Sarah Nelson invented Grasmere Gingerbread in 1854, introducing this unique, spicy-sweet treat to the world. Its reputation quickly spread, and now it’s known around the world. Today, the business is run by third-generation Joanne and Andrew Hunter, with The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop selling award-winning rum butter and various ginger-themed food and drink. Think toffee, fudge, chocolate, conserve, ginger beer, gifts, and more. So pop in for a sweet treat to warm you up.

Grasmere Offers Quiet Streets and Attractive Accommodation

There are few things better on a cold day than cosying up in a traditional Grasmere Pub or Tearoom with tasty food and drink. Some have roaring fires, comfy chairs, and hidden nooks for those who want to while away the time in the warmth. There are also many great Grasemere accommodation options for winter, with the average cost often lower in the cooler months while offering inclusions galore. For a gorgeous winter getaway, consider the Victorian House Hotel, which provides family, dog-friendly, and stargazer escapes.

Stargazing

Ah stargazing! Can you think of anything better on a chilly night than enjoying the clarity of the stars while being all bundled up, hot drink in hand? Soak up the Cumbrian night sky delights with the Victorian House stargazing experience, which will help you explore the winter sky and constellations.

Grasmere is genuinely one of the Lake District jewels worth exploring day and night. For more information on what to do or see during your time in Grasmere, visit https://www.visitlakedistrict.com.

5 Great Reasons to Visit the Lake District in Winter

The Lake District is renowned for being one of the most breathtaking places in the UK, with rolling hills, quaint villages, and countless vistas of outstanding natural beauty. Most people think of visiting in the summer, but it’s equally as beautiful and less crowded in the cold months, making it an ideal festive holiday location. Here are a few top reasons to visit the Lake District this winter.

Quaint and Quiet Villages With Festive Delights

The Lakes are well known for the abundance of beautiful towns and quaint villages, full of things to see and do. There is no finer way to pass a chilly afternoon than cosying up in a traditional Pub or Tearoom next to a roaring fire and enjoying tasty food and drink. It will be sure to warm the cockles of your heart. At this time of year, there are also winter light switch-ons, Lake District Christmas Markets and festive events with stalls packed with gift ideas, great food, warm drinks, and local produce. Santa will undoubtedly make an appearance at a few, much to the delight of any little ones you may have in tow.

Snow Capped Mountains Views

Summer sights in the Lake District are special and unique, but winter is truly a sight to behold. Nothing beats the landscape when it’s covered in immaculate white snow, the wind is still, and the world seems to fall silent. It’s truly a magical sensation to stand, marvel in the stillness, and soak in the sights, making a winter visit infinitely appealing.

Lake District Winter Walks

There’s nothing nicer than a walk on a winter’s day, discovering fresh morning frost clinging to the grass, frozen lake edges, the towering hills mirroring in the still water, and the calm all around. But life still abounds in the winter, even if the trees are leafless and the animals are hibernating, and you’ll no doubt spot tracks of one variety or another on a country walk. Alternatively, enjoy the sights and sounds in a wintering village that could have been lifted straight from a chocolate box. For advice on walking all year round safely, take a look walking in the lake district.

Quiet Accommodation with Cosy Nooks

Take the opportunity to venture into the cold, dark night and discover the constantly-changing sky between October and March. This adventure will provide ample opportunity to marvel at the seasonal constellations in the most beautiful area of the Lake District.
